A project that benefits biodiversity

13 March 2015

The main actions of the project are focused on about 5.000 ha considered of strategic importance concerning great forest fires prevention. These actions will result into a landscape evolution from present forest and shrub areas in which the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) is the dominating tree species in a homogeneous community with low biodiversity levels, to a new mosaic landscape scenario where open areas achieve a significant presence. The new landscape will be able to hold a higher diversity of habitats including some priority habitat types such as Mediterranean dry grasslands (being Brachypodium retusum the dominant species). Wildlife species fully depending on open areas such as the black wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) will be immediately favored and will return to areas from where they had been excluded by forestlands increase. Prey species such as partridges and rabbits will also find better habitat conditions in this new mosaic landscape and while their populations increase predators will be favored as well. Recovering a breeding pair of Bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata) in the area would be an excellent indicator that conservation objectives are being achieved.
