Annual Congress of the Spanish Society for the Study of Pastures

2 May 2017

The Spanish Society for the Study of Pastures (SEEP) organizes every year a Scientific Meeting where national and international experts meet and discuss on topics concerning pastures. The 2017 edition took place in Barcelona between April 25 and 28.

Forest grazing experiences have taken a leading role in the 2017 meeting of the SEEP as a model for the future in the management of Mediterranean ecosystems and, especially, as a strategy for preventive management against the risk of large forest fires.

In this context, LIFE Montserrat has played an active role in the agenda of the scientific meeting. On Wednesday 26 there was a scheduled field trip to the project area, attended by 70 people. They visited a strategic area for fire prevention where donkeys have been introduced to ensure grazing activity. A very productive debate ensued during the visit with new ideas to improve the management and the expected results.

On Friday 28 the activity was hold in La Pedrera, home of the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation, one of the partners of the LIFE Montserrat project. Throughout the morning there were several presentations and discussion boards focused on pasture in forest environments. They showed a scenario with lots of initiatives based on silvopasture as a powerful strategy to consolidate a stable and lasting model of ecosystem and fire risk management in Mediterranean environments. But a lack of operational and governance characteristics that could guarantee their success in the medium and long term seemed to be a common problem.
