New purchase of livestock

New purchase of livestock

27 September 2016

Most of the project expenditure in livestock is taking place during the second half of 2016.

A batch of 25 goats arrived to El Bruc in July to start up one of the two new flocks that will be settled in that area. This first flock will be increased with another 25 goats before the end of the year. The second flock will initially have around 60 goats that are expected in November. Both flocks should grow up to a number of 100 to 150 animals in the next couple of years. Goat breeds that have been selected are Payoyas and Floridas, both of them coming from southern Spain. They are dairy but also rustic breeds very well suited to the mountain and forest grazing activity required to meet the objectives of the project.

The flock of Floridas will enter to graze a strategic area in which there is a small herd of cows already operating. In the next weeks the number of cows will increase with the purchase of 15 new animals.

New livestock is also expected to be soon introduced in other sectors of the project area. In the northern part, between Castellbell i el Vilar and Castellgalí, the project has recently introduced 97 goats to create a new flock that will raise up to 200 animals before 2018. In the Esparreguera and Collbató area (southern part) there is an active flock of 200 Celtiberic goats that will be increased up to 300.

The implementation of a new herd between Olesa de Montserrat and Vacarisses, also in the southern area, and the possibility of another farmer from Castellgalí joining the project will be properly addressed at the beginning of 2017.
