Selection of goat breeds

Selection of goat breeds

18 March 2016

On March 8, LIFE Montserrat technical staff accompanied a delegation of farmers committed to the project in a trip to the Baix Camp and Priorat areas, in southern Catalonia. The objective was to visit some forest grazing projects underway in that area and see how different goat breeds behave to help decide which of them would best suit their needs in Montserrat.

The first part of the visit was focused on the grazing project carried out for the last 10 years by local farmer Pere Domènec in the natural site of Poblet. Later on they went to visit two projects working with different goat breeds used for milk production with some physiological and behavioural adaptations that allow them to graze in difficult forest areas. The experience was very useful for the LIFE Montserrat farmers in order to select best goat breeds, mostly for those willing to develop dairy production and processing activities.
