One of the main actions considered in the LIFE Montserrat project is the implementation of the grazing system (Action C3). Livestock activity is a key element to maintain low fuel loads and consolidate open areas in strategic areas for forest fire prevention, which is necessary in order to achieve main project objectives concerning fire protection and biodiversity conservation.
In the north-western side of the project area new infrastructures have been implemented in the last few months to extend livestock activity. Ongoing actions are focused on building new electric fences to set up enclosed grazing areas and the necessary works to have the water brought in. All this work will allow cows to graze the whole area in spring, extending the present grazing areas located in El Bruc, Sant Salvador de Guardiola and Marganell.
Works have so far been carried out only in areas not affected by the wildfire occurred in July 2015 to make sure that regeneration of the vegetation cover in burnt areas is not endangered. During 2016, the implementation of infrastructure will gradually extend to the areas affected by the 2015 wildfire and cows will be allowed to start grazing under strict technical monitoring. In both burnt and unburnt areas, an accurate control of the stocking densities will favour the development of herbaceous vegetation and it will restrict shrubs growth.
The project envisages the acquisition of new animals to complete the existing herds and thereby adjust to the extension of the grazing area.
