Extensive grazing among activities developed under the Social Entrepreneurship Program in Catalunya

A new business project dealing with extensive grazing has been presented in the scope of the Social Entrepreneurship Program in Catalunya. The project could help strengthen and make economically feasible extensive livestock holdings that have to face lower cattle productivity and longer fattening periods compared to those of intensive holdings, because of their productive model. The key idea is to capitalize extensive grazing both as forest fires prevention and habitat management tool and as an economic activity to obtain a product of strong commercial value: high quality meat. The opening of a new market with costumers being willing to pay an appropriate price for a quality product that contributes to preserve landscape and environmental values could provide a new range of development opportunities in less favored rural areas. At the moment, the project is working to build lasting agreements with livestock farmers committed to feed their cattle only with pasture offering in exchange personal advising and the marketing of their meat production.
