LIFE Montserrat project gives an important boost to forest management in the Montserrat area

7 April 2015

One of the associated beneficiaries of the project, the Montserrat Area Forest Owner’s Association (APFEM) had its annual meeting in Marganell on 26th March, 2015. During the meeting a presentation of the LIFE Montserrat objectives and main actions envisaged for 2015 was conducted by Leire Miñambres, the Project Technical Coordinator from Diputació de Barcelona (coordinating Beneficiary) and Miquel Rafa, Director of the Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera Department for Land and Environment (associated Beneficiary).

The Association budget and action plan for 2015 was approved during the meeting, including all actions related to the LIFE Montserrat project. Among them, concrete conservation actions dealing with forest management will promote better forest conditions in about 400 ha, representing up to four times the area in which active forest management was maintained in 2014. These actions will be developed in specific areas considered of strategic importance for forest fire prevention and will contribute to improve forest structure and make forests more resilient to fire.

The smooth progress of the project will also have an effect on local companies working in the forestry sector, as they will benefit from a substantial increase of demand for their services. Thus, the project increases its impact on local socioeconomic fabric and expands the benefits beyond forest owners, directly favored by actions performed in their lands, and the final beneficiary of both conservation of natural heritage and forest fire prevention actions, that is society as a whole .
