An Advisory Board has been created in order to ensure adequacy and relevance of all intended actions and as an instrument to provide advice to the project’s technical staff so that the main lines of the project remain properly focused throughout its life span. The Advisory Board is composed of a small number of experts in key project areas such as pastoralism, biodiversity, forest ecology and extensive livestock farming.
The first working session with the Advisory Board took place in Montserrat on April 24th. The day was divided into two parts. During the morning all participants (experts and project’s technical staff) went on a field tour in order to provide first-hand understanding of the project area to the experts. Several sites were visited for the purpose of showing a representative picture of environmental and agroforestry conditions in which concrete conservative actions will have to be developed, including parcels where forestry works have already been carried out and others where no actions have been yet performed. Visits were also useful to analyse the extensive livestock farming potential of the sites and to identify main difficulties to extensive grazing system implementation, the latter being a key factor in reaching the objectives of the project. In the afternoon field work was replaced by clerical work in a meeting where main weaknesses and threats concerning the project were discussed. Contributions provided by the experts were important for designing strategies to address critical aspects of the project. The need for an attractive offer to farmers willing to join the project was confirmed as the most important challenge in the aim to achieve the success of the project.
Once the experts had exposed their final conclusions, all the participants agreed to meet again in the autumn.
