LIFE Montserrat’s Education programme assessment

LIFE Montserrat’s Education programme assessment

9 May 2018

The 2017-2018 school year is about to finish. Over the past few months 20 primary and secondary schools from the project area have been working both in the classroom and in a field trip on the educational activities and materials designed by the LIFE Montserrat project.

Expected results have been achieved through joint efforts and collaboration with local schools:
• over 1200 students have had first-hand exposure to project activity and goals
• a wide group of teachers have assumed the technical contents of the project as a useful and interesting tool to approach many of the subjects included in the official educational curriculum from a broader viewpoint.

Teachers, students and the project technical staff met on 7 May with the aim to work together on the assessment of the LIFE Montserrat’s Education programme. The conclusions were clear: people from local schools have got very involved in a project focused on the management of the area in which they live. They highlight the value of the project to link the curricular contents they must study with a practical reality happening just next to them. They also focus on the student’s empowerment achieved because of their active role in a project concerning their closest natural environment.

The common demand from all those schools is to ensure the continuity of the education programme beyond LIFE Montserrat’s finalisation. Finding the ways and resources to make it possible has therefore became a new challenge.
