Prescribed fires that should have been carried out in the Puigventós area during 2015 have been completed in January 2016. This action remained unfinished in December due to unexpected moisture of the vegetation.
Overall, about 9 Ha of shrubs have been burnt. It is a step forward concerning fuel load reduction and local resilience to forest fires. The new landscape will offer an opportunity to firemen in case of fire so they can avoid the spread of the fire and put it out before it becomes a major forest fire.
Prescribed fires will also improve the habitats available for several bird species that are declining or even have disappeared from this area because of the advance of shrubs and pine forest and the lack of open areas.
In the next months, new prescribed fires are expected in other sections within the Puigventós strategic area. Livestock activity will also be under way in the near future to maintain the new landscape conditions.
