Strong boost to the livestock side of the project

19 January 2016

Actions dealing with livestock activity are critical for achieving project’s goals concerning fire prevention in strategic areas.

The allocation of grazing areas to particular farmers is a key step already under way after a long time spent in the identification and selection of local farmers and once strategic areas for fire prevention have been fully identified. At the same time, livestock requirements concerning adequate number and type of animals in order to achieve grazing objectives in each strategic area, have also been defined allowing necessary livestock purchase and infrastructure investments to be set.

All those issues were in the agenda of the general meeting held in El Bruc on December 30 with farmers selected to join the project. During the meeting, LIFE Montserrat technicians explained the agreements and conditions that should regulate the relationship between farmers and land owners under the guidance and mediation of the LIFE project. The meeting also served as the setting for the creation of the Montserrat Association of Livestock Farmers. This new association is already covered in the LIFE Montserrat project as an important action to ensure proper, effective and flexible relationships between the different actors involved. Thus, all the farmers joining the project will be required to also join the Association. The experience gained with local forest owners associations, which have been operational for years in the Barcelona Province, and with analogous farmers associations created in other areas with forest grazing activity shows the need for such an association.

All of this entails the beginning of a new phase of the project in which the implementation of the grazing system (Action C3) takes on special relevance and considerably increases its pace of activity. Important progress in measures concerning livestock purchase, infrastructure investments, grazing areas allocation and signature of grazing agreements are expected in the next few weeks and months.

In short, the livestock side of the project moves from planning to execution stage.
