Briefing with local municipalities

Briefing with local municipalities

15 June 2016

A project briefing with mayors and town councillors from the 14 municipalities within the project area took place on June 7 in Vacarisses.

Local elected representatives had not been called for such a meeting since December 2014, when the project was just starting. We are now halfway through the 4 years duration of the project and in a key moment for its implementation, with new flocks and herds almost ready to start grazing. So LIFE Montserrat managers thought it would be a good time to meet again with local municipalities and let them know about the project situation and the next steps planned.

During the meeting the LIFE Montserrat technical staff provided updated information on the pace of forestry works, livestock units planning and implementation, prescribed fires carried out and expected, working schedule with local schools, and other important actions currently underway, all of them requiring support and understanding from the local community. Another issue of particular concern both to the town councils and to the project, the maintenance of fire safety zones around residential areas, was also taken into consideration.

Local governments showed a very clear perception of the fire risk they are facing and, at the same time, they proved to be aware of the opportunity that a project such as LIFE Montserrat represents for them. In this regard, they all reiterated their commitment to the objectives of the project while setting up the specific aspects of most concern to each one of them.

This kind of meetings are basic to allow smooth communication between the project and the municipalities. And the one celebrated in Vacarisses has been very successful from this approach.
