Children of all ages from El Bruc Primary School have been very busy lately making clay seed balls. It all comes from an initiative driven by local organizations to favour the recovery of an area affected by the wildfire occurred in July. The local Forest Defence Group has organised the event with the support of El Bruc Town Council and El Bruc Primary School and the collaboration of the LIFE Montserrat project.
On 6 and 7 November children, parents and neighbours from El Bruc were invited to join the Primary School students and their teachers in a workshop to manufacture balls made out of clay, sand and seeds under Japanese farmer and biologist Masanobu Fukuoka techniques. The outcome of the workshop were 12,000 clay seed balls ready to be scattered in the burned area. The variety of seeds used to fill the balls included alfalfa (Medicago sativa), common sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) and vetch (Vicia sativa) among other herbaceous plants.
On 12 November the students went on a school field trip to spread the balls into the plots that had been selected by the LIFE Montserrat technical staff. They will strengthen vegetation cover and improve soil retention in the burned area.
Let’s hope Mediterranean autumn rains contribute to make this initiative completely successful.
