Project actions dealing with livestock activity are definitely on the move since the implementation of the grazing system should be operational in a few months.
An intense research work has been done in order to identify and make contact with all the livestock farmers located within the project area. Finally, on Friday 2 October, a general meeting with all of them took place at El Bruc Town Hall. The event was attended by almost 40 people including farmers, LIFE Montserrat technical staff and heads of local offices from the Catalan Department of Agriculture. The meeting started with a presentation of the LIFE Montserrat project where commitment and feasibility demands that will be required to farmers willing to join the project were set up. The agenda also included an open debate that allowed all the participants to share their opinions, doubts and foreseen difficulties with regard both to the project and to their own particular situation.
Moving herds to the project strategic areas, unnecessary administrative bureaucracy and conflicts concerning grazing in private lands are some of the main problems presented by the farmers.
One of the objectives of the event was to make a first selection of farmers with an adequate profile and visible interest in being involved in the project. This objective was fully accomplished and the meeting ended up with a list of candidates. During the next weeks, individual interviews will be programmed with all of them to carefully analyse their actual possibilities of joining the project.
