From 9 to 11 September 2015 three members of the LIFE Montserrat technical staff have visited the LIFE + MIL’OUV project at Floriac, in the French Massif Central, as part of the Networking actions of the project. The event was organized by the European Forum on Nature Conservation and Pastoralism (EFNCP) with the aim to strengthen the exchange of experiences among projects related to extensive livestock farming. The meeting has provided useful contacts and information in order to face up the challenges of the LIFE Montserrat project, so the overall outcome is very positive.
The programme included a working session devoted to the LIFE Montserrat project in which Ferran Pauné, the project expert on pastoralism, explained the project to the EFNCP members. The use of strategic areas to constrain extreme fires and provide enough time to allow proper fire response became a subject of highest interest among the audience.
During the on-site visits carried out in Les Causses-Cévennes area several farms based on sustainable open pastoral habitats management were visited. In this extraordinary landscape, a project focused on the conservation status of open pastoral habitats by improving existing support tools for stockbreeders is being implemented. It is the LIFE + MIL’OUV project. The visits included farms that are obtaining public funds in account of their agri-environment measures and all participants could learn about the policies supporting those farms and the traditional extensive farming practices developed to enhance and sustain local biodiversity.
