On 12-13 September, wildfire fighting specialists of the Catalan Fire Department executed a prescribed burning in the remaining 6 hectares of the Can Rubió sector that had not been completed before the summer. The creation of a 16 hectares plot of low fuel load is especially important in an area where forest and shrub continuity did not offer any opportunity to firemen in case of fire. At the same time, burning activity has created new open areas that will enhance biodiversity through new grassland habitats which are locally scarce. The action will benefit many flora and fauna species depending on this habitat, including the main prey species (partridges and rabbits) hunted by local eagles and owls.
Once the prescribe burnings have been completed it will be easier for the herd of goats that regularly grazes the area to maintain the new open areas and to preserve the environmental and landscape benefits that they provide.
